Close Reading (Annotation) Terms
- Diction- word choice
- Imagery- visually descriptive language; visual symbolism
- Irony- using language that normally signifies the opposite; when the full significance of a character's words or actions are clear to the reader but unknown to the character
- Symbol- an object, person, or situation that has another, deeper meaning other than its literal meaning
- Tone- attitude of a writer toward a subject or an audience. Tone is generally communicated through diction, point of view, and level of formality
- Tone (examples)- formal, informal, serious, comic, sarcastic, sad, cheerful, playful, condescending, despairing, anxious, excited, scared, hopeful, threatening, affectionate, light, dark
